Name: My very hungry caterpillar
Ages: 3 - 5
Especially for kids who love: Taking care of a cute little caterpillar!
Cost: Free to download, with in-app purchases (cost TBC)
We downloaded the app when it was still a paid app so we do not know the exact cost of the in-app purchase. But we dare to recommend the app anyway.
My very hungry caterpillar certainly is one of those older apps that is still very much worth downloading. It is an utterly delightful app that our kids keep going back to time after time.
Who remembers the My very hungry caterpillar book? We do! Or at least what the book looked like. This digital update of a character from 1969 (!) to a 3D-animated version is a real joy. The kids get to feed and play with the super cute caterpillar, create some caterpillar art and of course make sure the main character gets enough sleep so that it can grow and turn into a beautiful butterfly.
We are fascinated how this metamorphosis to a butterfly excites our kids over and over again, despite the fact that they have played the app numerous times. If the app was developed today there would probably be dozens of butterfly variants to ensure the kids stay engaged, but this app proves that such is not always needed. Being able to nurture your own little creature is enough to create the magic.
What else is good:
The app is very easy to use, without it being a “baby app”. Our son, who just turned three, has played with the caterpillar for a while now, but our soon five-year old daughter very much enjoys it too.
There is no text or talk so language barriers are not an issue.
What could be even better:
We wish developers would be better at explaining at app store descriptions what is included in the free version of the app and what will be the in-app purchase. This is not an issue just with My very hungry caterpillar, but is true to many kids apps that include in-app purchases. For us at least knowing more would definitely lower the barrier to download.
Developer:
The Irish developer Story Toys creates licensed apps for well-known kids brands like Lego and Disney. Many of the licensed apps on the market don’t do justice to the original brands but Story Toys is an exception and their apps are very high quality. We are big fans of their Miffy app too.
Have your kids already played with My very hungry caterpillar? What did you think about the app?
